Insider Tips to San Diego Zoo

The world-famous San Diego Zoo is a great attraction in San Diego all year long. Did you know that the experience is different depending on when you visit? In addition to seasonally themed shows, animal experiences and special guided tours are available for a special visit. Take a guided bus tour for a 35-minute adventure through highlights of the zoo and the aerial tram for views of the Zoo and Balboa Park as you travel over the trees from one end of the Zoo to the other.

A new area, Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, was created to encourage children to learn about nature and wildlife. There are areas for kids to climb and run, go inside a beehive and water areas to cool down. The human dryer will help the kiddos when they get a little too wet! Animal ambassadors are out to greet and there are many interactive learning stations too.

The San Diego Zoo provides many places to eat to add to your experience. Every area offers food inspired by the region. For example, at the Asian Passage the Hua Mei Café offers Asian inspired food like a Pineapple Teriyaki chicken sandwich.  In the morning, near the entrance, visit the Java hut for fresh doughnuts. For snacks during the day, stop at Rocks Box in Africa Rocks and get walking nachos (Doritos or Fritos with Nacho Cheese). For Lunch, The Sweet Shack has a Doughnut Burger, Thai Chili Wings or try the Italian Truffle Wings or Cesear Salad at the Busy Bee Café. This is also a great place to get local honey and they have Vegetarian options.

Feel like an adult beverage while you enjoy the Zoo? On the weekends there are Cocktail Carts with specialty cocktails for the area. A favorite is the Bees Knees, found by the Busy Bee Café. It may be the local honey that makes it so delightful. On Front Street, you can stop in San Diego Craft Beer and Margaritas and enjoy locally crafted beer and cocktails and a seat in the shade.
